Abstract

Migration and employment issues are among the main problems of many economies. While the phenomenon of migration can be defined as the geographical displacement of people, it has many macroeconomic effects. The relationship between migration and unemployment varies according to the conditions of each country. When the migration and unemployment literature is examined, the results on this subject are different from each other and there is no complete consensus. In the study, the relationship between migration and unemployment was investigated with the annual data of 2001-2019 for the G7 countries. For this purpose, panel ARDL analysis was used. Evidence in the study showed a statistically significant relationship between migration and unemployment variables, and a long-term relationship was found between migration and unemployment. According to the panel ARDL results, a 1% increase in immigration reduces unemployment by about 0.62%. As a result, since the phenomenon of migration is determined by many factors; it is necessary to develop policies specific to countries.
