Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research is to evaluate Sheila Hicks’ place in today’s art in terms of material use, space analysis and exhibition methods, in line with the artistic perspective formed by her passion for traditional/local craftsmanship, materials and applications in creating artistic forms. The reason why the artist was chosen for the research topic; The art works created with archetypal/traditional/local knitting techniques are inspiration and pioneers in terms of today’s art dynamics. In the research, a literature review about the artist was made. The visual references (metaphor) in Sheila Hicks’ works were emphasized, and the plasticization of fiber in the artistic creation process was examined. The metamorization of the weave, the meaning attributed to the forms (knitted canvas and fiber sculptures) and their relations with space, life, traditional technique and cultural structure are discussed in an ontological framework. Foray Into Chromatic Zones, Golben Tapestries, The Column of Inquiry, Mighty Mathilde and Her Consort, and Fishing in the River (Pêcher dans la Rivière) installations, Calligraphic Wilds (Baoli Chords/Cordes Sauvages Pow Wow), Procession Temuco, Compass Arica, Palitos con Bolas and Weaving as Metaphor: Minimes were examined. Sheila Hicks continued the plastise grammar tradition of the art of Robert Delaunay, Mark Rothko and Josef Albers, and at the same time, like her contemporaries Sonia Delaunay and Anni Albers, broke the boundaries between craft, art and design. The artworks boldly showcased both the grammatical tradition of modernist abstract painting and the traditional technique of weaving and knitting in contemporary art. His works have changed the definition of pure art with both material, technique - the use of textile, knitting, weaving - and formal abstraction innovations.
