Abstract

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811, 1863) was one of the most important novelists of the Victorian era. Just like his contemporaries, he addressed the social problems of the British society in the Victorian era in his works. This period called the Victorian era in which Thackeray lived was a period in England where plenty of showiness existed and people attached importance to wealth and money. Vanity Fair, his work that earned him the greatest reputation as a writer, also addressed these social problems. What distinguished it from its contemporaries was that he dealt with these disruptions through satire and with its unique setting rather than a realist criticism. The present article aims to analyze the unique setting of Vanity Fair and find out the ways in which the setting contributes to satire.
